Symposium ifi.2021

The IFI Symposium organising group is considering options for an online event, given the continuing Covid-19 crisis. Advances in online digital video conferencing platforms can make it highly interactive with networking facilities. A call for papers will be issued soon. We welcome all help and proposals in making this a reality – conference co-organisers needed.

Keynote speaker: David Bakhurst, Queen’s University, Canada/UCL, Institute of Education

Human society is at a crossroads. We face the breakdown of representative democracy and the rise of populism, an eco-systems emergency that has reached tipping point, alongside gross and growing social inequality. What is the role of philosophy in theorising these challenges in ways that point towards solution-oriented practices and activities? We welcome papers that take forward Evald Ilyenkov’s concept of the Ideal, the renewed interest in dialectics and the work of other Marxist theorists.

Suggested themes:

* The role of education in social transformation

* Understanding the present, neo-liberal period of history

* Social alienation and our relation to nature

* Theorising the state and democracy

* Social emancipation and the subject in the 21st century

The call for the symposium is supported by:

Bill Bowring Professor of Law, Birkbeck College, University of London; Illesh Ilyenkov, Ilyenkov’s daughter, co-editor of Ilyenkov’s collected works; Alex Levant, Ilyenkov translator & assistant professor Wilfred Laurier University, Canada; Andrey Maidansky co-editor of Ilyenkov’s Collected Works, Professor of Philosophy Belgorod State University, Russia; Elena Mareeva Professor of Philosophy at Moscow State Institute of Culture;   #eTownHalls The Great Mandate for Real Democracy USA, Real Democracy Movement UK
